July 28, 2024 - Throughout her three terms as District II Commissioner, Janet Thompson has fostered a genuine connection with the residents of Boone County. From her first days as County Commissioner, Janet has stated her intent as a politician: to leave the county better than it was before. To address the issues citizens have in mind, she seeks the public’s input, making sure everyone has a voice in the political process. In this role, Janet has facilitated intentional conversations between county government and various sectors of the community, including education, agriculture, law enforcement, the business community and more.
Diverse political perspectives and lived experiences are included in these conversations, which is not only positive community engagement, but is also the best method for creating good policy. After Proposition 1 was passed in April, Janet and the Boone County Commission held four public hearings to learn the community’s perspective on how the senior property tax freeze should be implemented. These meetings represented a close collaboration between the county government and its citizens, which is vital in a county that contains both large and small communities and a diverse population.
